The Lower East Side is known to both visitors and locals as one of the city’s hippest neighborhoods, home to cool indie bars, restaurants, music venues, and boutiques. The Blue Moon is especially popular with guests who are interested in the neighborhood's Jewish history and who'd rather see where young New Yorkers hang out, shop, eat, and drink than be in the tourist fray of midtown. The hotel draws all kinds of visitors including singles looking for a cheap dorm bed, couples, even families with multiple children thanks to the generous size of the rooms. Beyond the initial charms, though, there are some quirks like rickety furniture and some obvious wear and tear. Overall, there is a real bed & breakfast vibe here, which isn’t found in the many chain or luxury hotels spread around the city. The hotel goes to some length to imbue the public areas with a throwback look that includes framed 19th-century relics and pressed tin walls in the elevator. Guests enter through the ground floor cafe, and once inside, the red banquettes with fringed pillows and tables with vases full of flowers create a cozy bed-and-breakfast vibe. The portions are very large (the giant breakfast burrito is nearly the length of your forearm), the food was fresh and well spiced, and the salsa that comes with the free chips when you sit down is very good. The Blue Moon Hotel is housed in a building that was once a historic Lower East Side tenement built in 1879, now restored to give guests the atmosphere of that bygone New York era. For $4 more you can get unlimited mimosas and while we didn't opt for that, the server seemed to be filling the glasses of the party behind us quite frequently. Each of us ordered from the brunch menu - most items range from $8 to $12 and that includes a margarita, mimosa, or sangria. It was easy to talk and as long as you don't mind shuffling around periodically when someone needs to get in or out of their table, it's really no big deal. We got a table right away and while the place is cramped and nearly every table was full, surprisingly not noisy. Today was our second visit: the first was a random Saturday afternoon when we stopped in for some sangria and nachos (both recommended), the second was a 1PM brunch with friends. Solid four stars for non-authentic but heartily good Mexican fare. And I'm out for the rest of the night.Ħam alarm goes off (room still spinning).ħam I'm driving to Jersey (still tasting the tequila)Ĩam teaching college freshman the glories of multivariable calculus (head pounding. Hour later, I manage to stumble my way home. Still have another hour left in happy hour. Plus those were some damn strong margaritas, cause I'm really feeling it.ĭ. And of course can't have nachos without more margaritas. So after finishing the first round, we ask about the nachos. We Texans start thinking to ourselves maybe they think chips are nachos. Although we did get chips and some decent salsa (its no Austin salsa, but it does the trick). And then we see it.įirst margarita comes. had the day off last monday, and since I'm a grad student with nothing better to do we decided to go for a stroll.Īs we pass by Blue Moon, we see the sign for buy one get one free margaritas. I have eaten there since, but I recommend that you keep an eye on the amount of times the wait staff refill your glass, or you are likely going to lose track. The rest of us were smart enough to take taxis. One of our group took a subway home, only to have fallen asleep and woken up at Far Rockway. We left the restaurant at 4pm, after consuming nearly an untold amount of alcohol. Since we were a larger party, our food took a bit longer to prepare, and never once was my mimosa glass empty. I can officially say that I ordered huevos rancheros, and that I did eat a meal.but as for the quality of the meal.I'm not sure. Upon being seated, we each decided to have the unlimited mimosa special (which is a $3 additional charge to the brunch meal), and from this point on, things get hazy. Our group consisted of 8 runners and two spectators from the race. We arrived there at 11:00 am, as the doors were just opening and obviously were seated. After running a 5 mile race, my friends and I decided to have a celebratory meal at the Blue Moon Mexican Cafe.
